At around 1400 feet above sea level, St Mary’s, Greenhow is reputedly the highest parish church in England. It lies in the heart of the rugged Dales village of Greenhow and was built in 1847 for the thriving community of lead miners living on the hill.  

Whilst the exterior of St Mary’s is similar to many churches, the interior has several features which create a simple yet distinct ambience, the visible stone of the west wall in contrast to the adjoining smooth cream plastered walls, the beautifully restored light coloured wooden ceiling contrasting with the dark wooden beams and the beauty of traditional church pews, choir stalls and altar.

Seeking to offer a different style of worship, St Mary’s provides the parish with a twice-monthly Celtic Communion, in the style of the Iona Tradition. The beauty and simplicity of this service has drawn a faithful regular congregation to gather and worship God quite literally from the top of the hills.

In winter, the January, February and March services are held in St Michael and All Angels Church, Wilsill. Do come and join us!
