Holy Habits: The Examen

Simple, life-giving practices to help us walk more closely with God

As part of our Mission Action Plan (Signs of the Kingdom), Holy Habits invites us to pause and make space for God in the ordinary rhythms of our lives. This month’s habit is one of the oldest and most beautiful spiritual practices in the Christian tradition,The Examen.

Originally developed by St Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century, the Examen is a gentle, prayerful reflection on your day. It helps you notice where God has been at work, where you’ve felt close, or distant, from God, and what that might mean for tomorrow. It’s not about guilt or performance, but about growing in awareness, gratitude, and grace.

How to Practice the Examen
You can do this at the end of the day, before bed, or any quiet moment. It takes just 10–15 minutes.

  1. Be Still – Invite God In
Find a quiet space. Breathe slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and open your heart.
  2. Give Thanks – Review the Day with Gratitude
Let your mind wander back through your day. What are you thankful for? A friend or colleague? The beauty of creation? A piece of music or something you have seen on television? Thank God for each one.
  3. Pay Attention – Notice the Emotions
When did you feel joy, peace, or love? When did you feel anxious, tired, or irritated? These emotions are signposts. Ask: What were they telling me? Where was God in those moments?
  4. Face the Shadows – Ask for Forgiveness
Were there moments when you missed the mark? Times you were less than your best self? Be honest with God. Not to dwell in shame, but to receive grace and move forward with peace.
  5. Look Ahead – Ask for Help
Gently turn your attention to tomorrow. What’s coming up? Where might you need strength, courage, or wisdom? Offer it to God, and ask for guidance and peace.

Why Try It?

In a world that rushes on, the Examen helps us slow down and live more deeply. It teaches us that God is present not just in church or in crises, but in the ordinary details of everyday life. It helps us notice God’s nudges, receive God’s forgiveness, and grow in spiritual awareness.

Why not try the Examen this month, perhaps even with a cup of tea and a candle to mark the moment? It’s a holy habit that opens our eyes to grace, one day at a time.
